Two representatives of the environment department, Marylee Bouchard and Sally Quppia Mark, met with the board of NV Puvirnituq on January 22, 2020. They presented to the mayor of Puvirnituq, Mrs. Lucy Qalingo, and seven other members of the board, the nature of CRI's mining activities, the precautions taken to protect the environment and the actions taken by CRI to improve its environmental performance. The presentation was given in English and Inuktitut.
Notably, they illustrated the extent and rigour of the environmental monitoring carried out by CRI, which encompasses air and water quality and the state of biodiversity, both on PNNi (Projet Nunavik Nickel) sites and in more remote areas. They also provided explanations regarding the remediation of contaminated areas when environmental incidents occur on PNNi sites. Overall, it was a very positive and enriching meeting.
Additional meetings will be planned in the coming year, both in Puvirnituq and in the communities of Salluit and Kangiqsujuaq, in order to continue this dialogue, as soon as the public health measures for Covid-19 will allow this type of meeting.
